The Catamount Eastern Cup Race was revived this year with a new name and a new mission. Now a fundraiser for the Ryan Hawks Memorial Foundation, the race is held in memory of Flyin’ Ryan, a beloved Vermont skier who died in a tragic accident on the Free Skiing World Tour this winter.
New to the Eastern Cup was a 6hr. race. At 9am racers headed out under picture perfect Vermont skies. The first half of the roughly seven mile loop consisted of fast, flowing singletrack, much of which had been recently dialed in by Fellowship of the Wheel’s Pro Trail Crew. The second half featured a good mix of punchy climbing, technical singletrack, and high-speed descending.
On lap one it was solo rider Chris Hamlin who took to the front midway through the lap. Hamlin lit up the climbs to establish an early, and ultimately insurmountable lead. Behind Hamlin a chase group of four riders established itself and stayed together for the first half of the race. As the race neared the four-hour mark, however, the chase group began to disintegrate and George Lapierre—riding a rigid singlespeed no less—moved up solidly into second place. Behind Lapierre, Travis Voyer came home in third, with Jon Rowe edging out Chris Cover by just 30 seconds to take fourth.
In the team category it was a seesaw battle between the Montpelier duo of Nina Otter and Matt Williams, and the Five Hills shop team of George and Doug. Both teams opted to alternate laps between riders, and exchanged the lead a number of times. Otter took the lead for the last time in the final lap after a sidewall tear forced George to hike the final miles of the race to hang on to second.
Festivities continued throughout the afternoon with an XC race—won by Noah Tautfest (Kona)—a kids race, a barbeque, and raffle.
