Lumberjack 100 - Manistee, Michigan

National Ultra-Endurance Series #4

Christian Tanguy takes his third victory of the NUE season. Amanda Carey continues her domination of the NUE series with another win

This week the National Ultra-Endurance series heading to Northern Michigan for the fourth round of the 2011 series. The Lumberjack 100 once again played a gracious host to the best ultra-endurance racers from across the country.

Sitting just outside Manistee, Michigan, on the coast of Lake Michigan the Lumberjack challenged riders with it's 33-mile loop of never-ending, deep woods, singletrack. After the power start down roughly 2 miles of pavement riders complete three laps of the heavily-wooded racecourse.

In the men's event, a fast paced start left an elite group of riders off the front for the early stages of the race. While the group fluctuated in size it always included top NUE riders Jeff Schalk (Trek Racing Co-Op), Christian Tanguy (Team CF), and Michael Simonson (RBS/Trek).

The trio stayed pretty much intact until the third lap when Tanguy began attacking on the few gravel road sections of the course. After a few attacks he finally made one stick putting some time between himself and Schalk.

Once free, Tanguy charged all the way to the line. By the time he finished, the Michigan resident had put nearly 10 minutes on his closest competitor.

While Tanguy was flying free, Schalk was engaged in a tight battle with another Michigander, Simonson. These two have been fighting each other all season with Schalk managing to come out on top. This time would have the same result as Schalk crossed the line just 9 seconds in front of Simonson after 100 miles of racing.

Fourth place went to California rider Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/B & L). Prenzlow is one of California's top ultra-endurance riders and winner of this year's Julian Death March.

The final podium spot went to last year's surprise third place finisher Derek Graham.

The women's event showcased one of the most power-packed fields to start an ultra-endurance race. While several of the top women had missed the previous round of the NUE while racing the Trans-Sylvania Epic they were back and ready to race.

2010 NUE champion Amanda Carey (Kenda/Felt) wasted no time in going to the front right from the start. She was marked closely by last year's Lumberjack winner Cheryl Sornsen (Team CF). The two pushed the pace throughout the opening 33-mile lap until Carey finally dropped the Team CF rider.

Once out front Carey settled into her own rhythm and slowly pulled away from her competitors.

Meanwhile, MTBRaceNews.com/zaboo29 rider Karen Potter was fighting her own personal battle. Sitting in fourth place, the Massachusetts rider was not feeling her best. "I struggled in the first lap and the second I think was even worse," Potter said after the race. "Finally, by the third lap I seemed to get my legs back."

Indeed she did. With less than 33 miles left in the race Potter tracked down Vicki Barclay to move into third position. Sornsen still held several minutes on her challenger but was clearly suffering from her early efforts against Amanda Carey.

With less than a half lap to go Potter could see the second place rider and passed her as Sornsen stopped at a feedzone. Karen Potter would ultimately finish in second place with Cheryl Sornsen taking third.

The day belonged to Amanda Carey however. The Kenda/Felt rider has been all but unbeatable in ultra-endurance races this season. She has won every NUE race she's entered and squeezed a Trans-Sylvania Epic victory in for good measure. Carey is currently riding at a different level right now and seems to be on her way to another NUE series title.

The NUE heads west for it's next race. The Breckenridge 100 will take place in Breckenridge, Colorado, July 16th. Check in with MTB Race News for all the most up-to-date results and reports from the NUE series.
