Rabbit Valley Rally - Fruita, Colorado

Mountain States Cup #2

BACKCOUNTRY COURSES AND SNOWY PASSES MAKE MSC #2, RABBIT VALLEY RALLY
AN EPIC ADVENTURE ALL AROUND

Honey Stinger/Trek and Rocky Mountain Chocolate dominated the 1-2 podium positions for the Rabbit Valley Rally cross country race on Sunday. Kelly Magelky (Honey Stinger/Trek) and Colton Anderson (Rocky Mountain Chocolate) took the top two spots for Pro Men with a 2.01.30 and 2.05.50 and Teal Stetson-Lee (Rocky Mountain Chocolate) and Jennifer Gersbach (Honey Stinger/Trek) for the pro women with a 2.25.16 and 2.25.41. Mike West (Yeti Cycles) and Erin Huck (Tokyo Joes) took third place respectively for the pro men and women.

Over 300 racers prevailed the closed I-70 corridor on Friday to race the time trial on Saturday and cross country race on Sunday. "The courses were in the best condition we have ever seen,” said Keith Darner, race director. "Intermittent rain and even snow during the week of the event made the courses hard pack and fast! Windy conditions slowed down the fields a bit on Sunday, but the fast tracks made up for it.”

The 4.6 mile time trial on Saturday epitomized the roots of mountain bike racing, as it involved steep ascents, technical features, and lots of rollers where riders were faced with the decision of pedaling through or doubling up. Tad Elliott (Rocky Mountain Chocolate) won with a 15.33.73 and Brad Bingham (Moots Cycles) was second with a mere .25 second gap. Mike West (Yeti Cycles), legend to know the most technical and fast lines in the course was close behind with a 15.41.25.

Stetson-Lee doubled up for the weekend winning the pro women time trial with a 18.17.70 and Huck placed a close second with a 18.42.07.

Pro and CAT 1 racers tackled the 32-mile cross country course that started at the Kokopelli Trailhead at Rabbit Valley and led to Westwater Mesa and back via Western Rim. A mix of fast, road-racing tactics and technical riding made the best all-around rider take the lead.

"We had a great turnout for the weekend and hope that one year, I-70 will be clear!” said Sarah Rawley, public relations Bigfoot Productions. "Maybe we’ll have to have the event the end of May to be sure, but then again, it’s Colorado!”

The event was sponsored by Yeti Cycles, Shimano, DT Swiss and the Grand Junction Visitor’s Bureau.
