There was a collective sigh of relief
amongst racers at the Transylvania Epic today, as it was all about
Enduro on day three. With five fun, varied descents there were a lot
of smiles out on course today. The fact that racers could then rider
at their leisure up the climbs no doubt added to racers' enjoyment on
The Enduro stages 1 and 2 were mostly XC style descents that got riders into the flow of the day, with relatively easy climbs in between stages. Stage 3 saw the highest speeds of the day, as riders bombed tight, fast singletrack while dodging the rocks and logs poking in on the edges. Towards the end of the day, on stages 4 and 5 riders hit the more DH style tracks, with big, high speed rock gardens presenting serious consequences for those that couldn't stay on their line.
While riders had little idea of how they were doing during the stage, in the end it was Michael Brodrick (Kenda/No Tubes) and local Vicki Barclay (Stan's No Tubes) taking the wins.
Today's stage counted toward both overall GC (Total Time), and the Enduro Competition (Enduro Points).
Both overnight GC leaders, Cheryl Sornson (Rare Disease Cycling) and Jeremiah Bishop (Sho-Air Cannondale), retained their overall GC leads heading into Stage 4.
Tomorrow riders tackle to "road
stage,” though this year some additional singletrack has been added
to the 40 mile stage. Predicted rain will not doubt play a factor in
the stage as well.
