Santa Fe Brewing/Pivot Team Launch

Former Orbea-Tuffshed racer and 2012 Single Speed Stage Race World Champion Macky Franklin will partner with Karen Jarchow and Steve Thompson to form the new Santa Fe Brewing – Pivot Professional Mountain Bike Team. The team will be racing Cross Country and Enduro in the coming season.

"I’m stoked to race with Steve and Karen,” says Franklin. "I’m also stoked to be representing brands that are doing great things to promote the sport.”

In 2012, Franklin placed 4th at the Downieville Classic, 3rd at Super D National Championships and 2nd at Single Speed World Championships, in addition to winning SSSRWC and the series overall in the Mountain States Cup. He’s looking to build on these successes in 2013 with appearances at the US Pro XCT series, Big Mountain Enduro series, Colorado Freeride Festival, Downieville, and others.

Jarchow will focus on Cross Country this year but will also be racing some Enduros. Look for her at Pro XCTs, Teva Mountain Games, Breck Epic and the Big Mountain Enduros, among others. This is only Jarchow’s fourth year riding mountain bikes. In her first season, she went from beginner to expert in her local series, earning her the "anti-sandbagger award.” She’s gone on to win even more prestigious titles—she placed 2nd in the 2012 Rocky Mountain Endurance Series and is the current women’s record holder for fastest lap at 12 Hours of Snowmass.

Thompson will focus on Enduro races in the Rocky Mountain region as well as some marathon distance events. He will be splitting his time between racing, managing the team and competing in motocross.

The team will ride Pivot bikes (the Les for Cross Country and the Mach 5.7 Carbon for Enduro) built up with Shimano Components (drive chain, wheels, brakes), Ergon grips and saddles, Xpedo Pedals and X-Fusion suspension. Bars, stems and seat-posts from Loaded Components will bring some bling to the mix.  The team will be riding Geax tires and helping the company test new tread patterns. (Fun fact: Geax is pronounced "G-X” not "geeks.” Franklin is the only geek on the team.) Sea Sucker will outfit the team with vacuum-mounted bike racks, the fastest installing bike rack in the world. Look for the car that seems to be wearing a giant octopus.

In the fashion department, the team will sport helmets and pads from Poc, shoes from Northwave, and glasses from Smith. They are presently in discussion with clothing companies but are contemplating the cheaper and more eco-friendly option of racing in the nude. On race days, they will be fueled by Vermont Peanut Butter and Honey Stinger, and their bottles will be cleaner than everyone else’s, thanks to Clean Bottle (they open on both sides! Brilliant!).

Santa Fe Brewing will be the title sponsor of the team and the post-race party. Gemini Lights will be on hand to provide light should shenanigans (on bike or otherwise) persist past dark.  O-tus Helmet Speakers will provide the soundtrack for what is bound to be an awesome and record-breaking season. Experts, or maybe just Jarchow, have predicted a "high fun meter reading.”

While Santa Fe Brewing-Pivot is serious about results (if not press releases), the team is just as serious about having fun and promoting the sport. "Racing is a great way to meet people and share my passion for bikes,” says Franklin. "I want to build this community and get people excited about racing bikes. I’m especially excited to help the growth of Enduro in the United States. I think we’ve built a strong base and I’m looking forward to growing with this team.”

"When it comes down to it,” says Jarchow, "we’re all just stoked on bikes. Results aside, it’s all about having fun. If you’re staying motivated and keeping it fun, results will follow.”

Thompson was unavailable for comment due to a "mind fart” but did mention that he has high hopes for the team.

So when you see the team at the races (look for their bright yellow jerseys) stop by and say hello. You can ogle their Pivots and they might even have a Santa Fe Brewing beverage with your name on it…
