The Pinnacle - Newport, New Hampshire

National-Championship Level Women's Field Toes the Line at 15th Annual Pinnacle

The 15th annual Pinnacle race, held in Newport, New Hampshire, this past Sunday, was host to the return to racing for 2013 women's national champion, Lea Davison (Specialized). Davison last raced in October, 2013 and subsequently had hip surgery this past winter.  For her first race back post-surgery, Davison would have to contend with one of the most talented and largest elite women's field to congregate in New England outside a national race level event.  Race promoters excited with the large elite women's field extended the podium form 3 to 5 places.

Race day conditions were perfect for the very typical northeast mountain kind of course.  Trails were dry. The sun was shining and temps were warm for a late spring day.  The course climbs in steps up rooty, traversing singletrack that tests a riderís fitness and skill to hold a line.  The top of the course boasts fun, technical twisting singletrack followed by a similarly flowing downhill, including several bermed corners.  Racers had to keep the mindset of suffering up the climb to enjoy the sweet, twisty downhill.

Davison was off the front from the start with Crystal Anthony (Riverside Racing) and Karen Potter (Epic Brewing/MTBRaceNew.com) in chase.  She set a hard pace to follow on a course that rides like most of the trails in her home state, Vermont.  Anthony pursued in 2nd but was unable to close the gap finishing 3 minutes back from the National Champ.  The battle for 3rd ensured behind with Potter and Elisa Otter trading positions throughout the race.  Potter managed to catch back up to Otter at the top of the climb on the final lap.  A crash by Elisa Otter gave Potter the chance to get by and take 3rd on the podium.  Maureen Bruno-Roy followed up in 5th.

The elite men's race saw Noah Tautfest take the win by almost 2 minutes over Billy Melone (Riverside Racing).  Chris Hamlin was close behind in 3rd less than a minute back.
