MTBRacenews.com is hitting the road
this weekend for the week long No Tubes Transylvania Epic Stage Race presented
by Dirt Rag. We’ll be providing you with daily race updates, photos, extras,
and blog posts from our contributors Liz Cabot Allen and Greg Jancaitus.
The fun at Transylvania kicks off
with a new "Meet the Pros” event held in conjunction with the opening day of
racing Sunday, May 25 at high noon near State College, Pennsylvania. The
seven-day, world-class mountain bike competition will run through Saturday, May
"Everyone should know about this!
These are world class athletes and future Olympic hopefuls competing,” said
Rich O’Neil of the State College-based Stan’s NoTubes which is helping make the
"Meet the Pros” day possible along with other area businesses like Freeze Thaw
Cycles, The Bicycle Shop and Videon. "Come on out, meet them, enjoy some Clem’s
BBQ and get a taste for this incredible event.”
While most of the contenders
present on Sunday will be competing in the seven-day version of the NoTubes
Trans-Sylvania Epic, there is also a three-day version of the race, known as
the TS3, which overlaps with the first three days of the seven-day race. The three-day option is brand new for 2014.
The NoTubes TSEpic "Meet the Pros”
BBQ will start at noon. Food will be served until it’s all gone. Watch some
great racing, first with a cross country race held as part of the three-day
TS3, then with an individual time trial, held as part of the seven-day TSEpic
starting just after 2:00 pm.
Defending elite men’s champion
Justin Lindine (Team Redline / NBX) is travelling to the NoTubes Trans-Sylvania
Epic from Utah and another past winner and former mountain bike national
champion Jeremiah Bishop (Sho-Air/Cannondale) is coming from Virginia. Favorite
Ben Sonntag (Stan’s NoTubes) hails from Germany, and the Canadians will be well
represented with riders like Peter Glassford (Trek Canada Mountain Bike Team)
and Barry Wicks (Kona). Current US
cyclo-cross national champion Jeremy Powers will represent New England as will
Mike Broderick (Kenda/Stan’s NoTubes).
Past women’s winners Cheryl Sornson
and Selene Yeager (both Team Rare Disease Cycling) hail from Pennsylvania but
they’ll face a big challenge from Olympian Mary McConneloug (Kenda/Stan’s
NoTubes) of California. Sarah Kaufmann (Stan’s NoTubes Elite Women’s Team) of
Colorado and former cyclo-cross junior national champion Ellen Noble (Trek Bear
Development) of Maine add depth to the elite women’s field.
New for 2014, top riders at the
Transylvania Epic will be outfitted with GPS tracking, allowing fans to watch
the race develop in real time online.
