Mount Ogden 100k - Snowbasin, Utah

written by: Shannon Boffeli

The Mount Ogden 100k is one event in an exciting new wave of mountain bike races sweeping across Utah. Challenging. Scenic. Rewarding. Are all words used to describe this new breed of racing and all apply to the Mount Ogden event.

Each 50 kilometer lap, located in Snowbasin Resort, features almost 5,000 vertical feet of climbing and a fist full of gnarly descents. Riders wind their way up the mountain through scrub oak and aspens finally ending with a technical rocky descent taking them all the way down the mountain in 45 minutes of non-stop DH fun.

365 riders from 25 different states signed up for either the 25, 50, or 100k distances with the 100 being the marquee event on schedule.

In the men's event it was Jamis rider Jason Sager hitting the gas first and spreading out the field on the long opening climb. Sager, an Ogden local, produced a surprising amount of speed gapping a stacked field of riders including Cannondale's Alex Grant, Team CF rider Cary Smith, and the Honey Stinger duo of Peter Kalmes, and Trevor Walz.

Sager held his gap throughout the opening lap but Grant was lurking just behind.

Never out of sight Alex Grant slowly worked his was up to the leader. The two rode together at the front for a bit until Grant's seemingly effortless climbing became too much for Jason Sager.

Once again Alex Grant proved that once he gets out front in a race almost nothing can bring him back. After the long climb Grant bombed the descent rolling his Scalpel 29 over and around the rocky strewn trails. By the end he would put over 9 minutes on the field.

Meanwhile, Jason Sager did his best to hold onto second but a determined Ben Aufderheide (The Hub) tracked him down on the 9-mile uphill finish, finally taking over second spot with less than a mile to go. Sager skillfully tucked in behind Aufderheide and waited until just before the line to launch his attack. His plan worked to perfection as the Jamis rider took second by less than a wheel.

Wyoming rider Cary Smith took the fourth spot with Colorado rider Peter Kalmes claiming fifth.

The women's event featured an equally stacked field with Colorado rider Jenny Smith (Stan's NoTubes Elite) taking early control of the race.

Smith described her race a "magical" and one of those days you only get a few times a year. Her joy was evident as she tore up the climbs and shredded the rocky descents all while taking in everything Mount Ogden had to offer.

While Smith enjoyed the early lead Evelyn Dong (White Pine Touring) and Crystal Anthony (Riverside Racing) battled it out for control of the runner up spot. At first Anthony proved a tough competitor hanging tight with Evelyn Dong despite having just flown in from Massachusetts the day before.

Eventually, Dong broke free and set her sights on Smith. Although out of sight most of the day Dong slowly gained ground on the leader and was within sight on the final 2-mile section of road climbing to the finish. Despite giving it her all, Jenny Smith remained in control and out front until crossing the finish line beating Evelyn Dong by just 44 seconds.

Crystal Anthony held on for an impressive third in her first high-altitude mountain bike race.

KC Holley (4 Life) took fourth with Jen Hanks (Epic Brewing/MTBRaceNews.com) taking fifth.
