Enduro Cup #1 - Moab, Utah

Heather Irmiger and Ross Schnell Win at Inaugural Enduro Cup

May is the month for Moab and Moab greeted the Enduro Cup with perfect conditions for the first stop of the 2013 series season Saturday, May 4. A high caliber field of 119 athletes gathered for the first mountain bike race ever to be held on the Magnificent 7 trail area recently created by Grand County Trail Mix. Positive energy and smiles radiated off the course alongside top notch riding by all racers. At the end of the event, Trek team riders Heather Irmiger and Ross Schnell took the top podium spots in the Open categories. Schnell had a screaming fast time of 24:32.4 and Irmiger raced her timed sections in 28:35.5.

"The course was super fun and technical, not too burley, not too physical," explained Schnell. "It was more physical than most enduro races. You're riding around with your buddies then go super hard for six minutes, and it was just like a group ride. The first Enduro race here at Mag 7 was a good test of future events and Mountain Sports International pulled it off with style."

In addition to $2,500 total in prize money in the Open category, racers in the Amateur and Junior categories received product from presenting sponsor Bell helmets and Tifosi Optics. Many racers also received prizes in the raffle, which raised $580 for Grand County Trail Mix. Raffle prizes were provided by Bell helmets, Tifosi Optics, Club Ride, Ergon, Canyons Resort, Snowbasin and ENVE Composites.

"The event was incredible. To have a race in this community is pretty top notch," remarked Irmiger. "I'm coming off ten years of cross country world cup racing, but this year I'm only doing enduros."

This was the first stop of three in the new Enduro Cup series. Inspired by it's incredible success, Wasatch Enduro has been expanded to a new Enduro Cup series. Enduro Cup will provide more opportunities for athletes to compete on Utah's incredible mountain bike terrain. The next stop at Canyons Resort will be held July 19-20. The final stop will take place at Snowbasin Resort in August (Date TBD).

"We are incredibly excited by the turnout we had in Moab. It has been the perfect start to the season," said Enduro Cup Event Director Dan Roper of MSI. "Competition in all categories was stellar. We are eagerly looking forward the second stop at Canyons Resort which is sure to sell out."
