Coyote Hill Classic - Vermont
Noah Tautfest (Bicycle Express) and Crystal Anthony (Riverside Racing) took the wins in an epic, snow tinged edition of the Coyote Hill Classic on Sunday. Stop number five in the Root 66 New England Series, Coyote Hill is seemingly always muddy and rooty - a classic New England course. However, a big storm that dropped over a foot of snow on the high peaks of Vermont on Friday and Saturday made things even more interesting this year. The mud and cold made technical skills, eating, and staying warm huge factors in the race.
Anthony's lead was never really in doubt. She had solid gap by the end of the first lap, and seemed comfortable in the treacherous conditions, which no doubt favored her cyclocross skills. Second went to another 'cross racer, Joanne Grogan (ENGVT). Behind, Hattie Freye and Nina Otter (Mountain Moxie) battled for third throughout the race. Freye was able to find that little bit of extra energy for the final lap, however, and powered away from Otter to finish third.
Though the time gaps were closer, the men's race followed a similar patter with Tautfest grabbing an early lead that he held to the end. Attrition played a role in the results though, with Andrew Freye dropping out with one lap to go while riding in third. That opened the door for Kevin Hines (Corner Cycles) to sneak onto the podium. Gered Dunne (Mason Racing) took second.
