Firecracker 50
Breckenridge, Colorado

Jamey Driscoll Wins in Photo Finish Over Chris Baddick as Jenny Smith Wins in a Sprint

Written by: Marlee Dixon

The Breckenridge Firecracker 50 fills up each year and itís no surprise.   Set on the 4thof July in Breckenridge, racers lead out the town parade as they are cheered on by thousands of people.   The race start is a road climb of ~5 miles, which helps to spread out the racers and gives you a feel for the thousands of feet of climbing you are in for!  Once the road climb is over, itís on to some of the best single track that you will find.  Living in Breckenridge, Iím very partial to our trails and I believe we have some of the best riding in the country.  The firecracker 50 takes you on a maze of these trails, that even as a local I have a difficult time finding the exact course again.  The course also tests racers from the infamous "Little FrenchĒ climb (good luck clearing this climb) to some loose gravel descents where your heart races as you bike flies almost out of control down some great trails. The Firecracker is one of the best endurance races with 8,000 feet of elevation gain over 50 miles.  Aid stations with plenty of hand-offs are located frequently around the course.  New this year, the final descent into Carter Park went through Barney Flow.  This trail is a series of berms and jumps leaving you doing whoop-de-dos and smiling ear to ear.

Personally, I almost didnít race the firecracker this year because Iíd been feeling sick all week.  I came down with a cold right before my race the previous weekend (another great endurance race- the CB 40) and had been congested and sick all week.  Doing everything possible to rid myself of my cold I loaded up on vitamins, netty pot, rested in bed a few days and drank hundreds of ounces of fluids each day to get to 100% for this race.  I was feeling a lot better by the time the race came around..  and really I couldnít imagine not racing the Firecracker.  There is no race quite like it.  From starting out the race amongst the excitement of the town parade, to riding some of the best trails in the country, to the struggle of climbing 8,000 feet at race pace to finishing at Carter Park which becomes a huge lawn party, itís a race that revitalizes me and makes me psyched to keep riding my bike and racing.  Even a few days later, when my body is still sore, I keep thinking about the trails I just rode during the Firecracker and I canít wait to get back on my bike and ride.

The race for the Pro/Open category this year was exciting for spectators.  The pro men came through the first lap with about 10 men all within 35 seconds of each other.  Quite a few more pro men came through in the next 5-10 minutes.  The second lap split up most of the pro men except for 1st and 2ndplace who came across the finish line only .2 seconds apart. Thatís point 2 seconds, after 50 miles of racing! It was a photo finish with Jamey Driscoll in 1st, followed by Chris Baddick in 2nd, Peter Kalmes in 3rd, Bryan Alders in 4th and Alex Pond in 5th

For the Pro women Kelly Boniface came through the first lap with a strong lead in 1st place followed by Jenny Smith in 2nd.   Kelly was in 1stfor most of the entire second lap but Jenny caught up to her and took the win on one of the final descents.  1stplace was Jenny Smith, followed by Kelly Boniface in 2nd, Jari Kirkland in 3rd, Marlee Dixon in 4th and Liz Sampey in 5th
