12 Hours of Mesa Verde - Cortez, Colorado

Good Times Dominate 2013 12 Hours of Mesa Verde

Once again the 12 Hours of Mesa Verde and the trails at Philís World delighted riders and produced a dozen hours of exciting racing. Located in the high-desert community of Cortez, Colorado, in the shadow of Mesa Verde National Park, the Philís World trail system provides an exciting and enjoyable mix of ripping fast hardpack, ledgey rock, and giggly-fun whoop-dee-doos.

Racing started at 7am with a Le Mans start and a long run to the bikes. Duo menís rider Nick Fisher led out the run and followed it up with some fast riding as he led for the entire opening 16-mile lap. Fisherís teammate Brent Pontius (Roosterís/Bikerís Edge) took over keeping the team in first place overall for the first half of the race. They were eventually displaced at the front of the race by the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory 3-person menís team who were aided by the performance of Payson McElveen who turned in a record-setting lap time of 1 hour seven minutes.

McElveenís team would eventually win the 3-4 menís category as one of only a few teams to complete 10 laps. The duo team of Fisher and Pontius also went on the win in dominating fashion and becoming the first two-person team to ever complete 10 laps.

Always the highlight of any 12 hour race, the solo categories pitted several Mesa Verde veterans against each other in a race of attrition. In the Solo Men's race, Utah rider Michael Muhlstein (Roosterís/Bikerís Edge) got out front early and appeared to be on his way to taking the win still holding the lead after 5 laps. A late race fade and steady pacing by Brian Bennett (Pivot) moved Bennett into first place late in the race.

By the finish Muhlstein would drop all the way to third with Stew Gross sliding into the runner up spot with all of them completing 8 laps.

For the second year in a row local singlespeed rider Shawn Gregory (Kokopelli Bike) had the fastest overall solo time beating all the geared riders on his singlespeed. Gregory completed 8 laps in 11.29.29 Ė just a little over a minute faster than geared winner Bennett.

Endurance specialist Jari Kirkland (Griggs Orthopedics) surprised absolutely no one by crushing the solo womenís category. Kirklandís biggest competition was herself. Before the race she set an ambitious goal of completing 9 laps and she wasnít far off completing 8 laps in 12:18:12. In the end Kirkland was the only woman to complete 8 laps.

Pam Seidler (Basalt Bike & Ski) finished off a long day in second and Roxanne Hall (Tennessee Pass Cookhouse) took third, with both completing 7 laps.

Nina Baum of the No Tubes Elite 3-4 person coed team posted the fastest womenís time of the day at 1 hour 18 minutes. Baumís team including Kenny Wehn and Jens Nielsen took the 3-4 person coed crown overcoming Nielsenís broken pedal axle just 6 miles in to the 16-mile lap. Nielsen managed to grind out 10 uncomfortable miles unable to stand and pedaling with just one leg.

Amy Beisel and Janae Prtichett topped off a successful day for the Griggs Orthopedics team taking the win in the duo womenís category.

Jen Hanks and Shannon Boffeli (Epic Brewing/MTBRaceNews.com) took the coed duo title becoming just the second coed duo team to complete 9 laps at the Mesa Verde racecourse.
