6 Hours of Frog Hollow - Hurricane, Utah

Brent Pontius and Joanne LaBelle take solo titles at Frog Hollow

Written by: Shannon Boffeli

Mud is about the last thing riders expected to see at this years 6 Hours of Frog Hollow but that is what they got after heavy rains on Friday left large puddles of standing water throughout the racecourse.

Along with moisture, the storm also brought in cooler temps and pleasant riding conditions.

The soft dirt may have slowed opening lap speeds but the output was still high from the top riders. The fastest lap times would be reserved for later in the race when trail conditions firmed up a bit.

The big guns were still bringing the pain in the first lap. Solo riders Brent Pontius (Rooster’s/Bikers Edge), Sam Sweetser (Cole Sport), and Zach Peterson (Kuhl) were bunched up at the front, racing like it was a cross country event.

Sweetser had the early lead finishing the first lap in 50:08, fastest of all the solo riders. Pontius was close behind and clocked a faster second lap getting him back on Sweetser’s wheel.

16 year-old Zach Peterson remained in third, closest of all the challengers.

As the hours ticked by course conditions slowly improved and riders started shredding the hero dirt on the world-renowned Jem Trail.

It was at this point the Chris Holley (4Life) clocked the fastest lap of the day with a 48:52. Holley was riding on a co-ed duo team with his wife KC.

At the same time Erica Tingey (Kuhl/Rocky Mountain) was cranking out the fastest women’s lap of the day with a 54:17. Tingey was also racing duo with her husband John.

Sweetser and Pontius were still locked in battle until Sweetser snapped his rear derailleur cable. Sweetser was forced to ride the final 2 laps without shifting, amazingly it only added a handful of minutes to his overall time but that more than enough for Brent Pontius to take the win.

Sweetser held on for second with Christian Faatz making a move in the final laps taking him from 6th to 3rd place at the finish line.

Zach Peterson held on for 4th place just 90 seconds in front of Shannon Boffeli (Epic Brewing/MTBRaceNews.com).

The winner of the women’s race was much less in question as Victor, Idaho, rider Joanne LaBelle (Peaked Sports) took a commanding lead right from the start putting several minutes into second place rider Erin McDermott on the first lap.

LaBelle never looked back from that point. She lengthened her lead on every lap finishing with 5 laps completed. She crossed the line 14 minutes in front of Erin McDermott.

Third place went to Steamboat, Colorado, rider Bec Bale (Yeti/Honey Stinger). Nicole Gunton finished 4th and Ali Knutson rounded out the podium in 5th.
